Centers for American Studies

Preamble

The United States of America plays an influential role in the world today, one that is unique in history. It will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, despite its awesome economic, political, and military power, the American nation is frequently regarded as a land of western-shoot-outs and fast food outlets, populated by a people out of touch with the rest of the world. In a word, its history, its system of government, its people and culture are often unknown, and more often misunderstood even by world leaders.

While centers for Chinese, Russian, and Middle Eastern area studies, for example, are many, Centers for American Studies are virtually non-existent. Our Centers for American Studies are intended to fill that gap. Free from association with any government, they will present American history, government, and culture in a comprehensive, objective, and integrated manner.

They will have national and international reach as non-profit, independent entities. They will enable individuals from other countries, but especially the Middle East, to pursue American studies in a neutral, international environment.

The first Center was established in Rabat, Morocco, at Mohamed V University, Soussi, Sala Campus, on 01 October 2004. It will provide guidance and technical assistance to education institutions in other parts of the country that wish to include aspects of American studies in their programs.

Funding will be sought from those private individuals, foundations, and businesses that support the objectives of these centers.

American education institutions are invited to support the Centers by offering the services of teachers and professors to teach at the Centers for short periods of time, and by donating books, used and new.
